Violence Erupts in Syria: 24 Killed in Clashes Between Kurdish Forces and Turkish-backed Militias

In northern Syria, violent clashes between the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and Turkish-backed militias have escalated, resulting in the deaths of at least 24 fighters. The violence, which flared up in the region surrounding Manbij, has drawn significant attention due to its intensity and the ongoing instability in Syria. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a UK-based monitoring organization, reported that the fatalities include 23 fighters from groups supported by Turkey, along with one member of the Manbij Military Council, which is affiliated with the SDF.

The conflict ignited when Turkish-backed fighters launched an assault on areas south of Manbij. These regions have long been a flashpoint in the conflict, with various factions competing for control. The SDF, primarily composed of Kurdish fighters, has been in a protracted standoff with Turkey for years. Ankara accuses the SDF’s core group, the People’s Protection Units (YPG), of having ties to the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), which Turkey deems a terrorist organization. Both Turkey and the United States have blacklisted the YPG as a terrorist group due to its alleged connections with the PKK.

The recent clashes have seen the use of heavy artillery, with Turkish forces reportedly deploying drones, tanks, and artillery to target positions in the area. According to the SDF, they successfully repelled the attack, with their fighters destroying several vehicles and killing numerous Turkish-backed militants. The SDF issued a statement saying their forces withstood the assault despite the intense bombardment, which included five Turkish drones and modern armored vehicles. The situation in Manbij remains tense, with fighting continuing in the surrounding areas.

In addition to the military confrontations, there have been reports of civilian casualties resulting from the ongoing airstrikes. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights noted that in the village of Jarfan, located near Manbij, Turkish-backed forces’ artillery strikes killed at least ten people, most of them civilians. This highlights the growing humanitarian crisis in the region, where both combatants and non-combatants suffer from the relentless violence.

Turkey’s military presence in northern Syria is part of a broader strategy to weaken Kurdish influence in the region. Since 2016, Ankara has launched multiple military operations against the SDF, seeking to diminish the Kurdish groups that have gained significant territorial control in northeastern Syria. As a result, Turkish-backed forces have captured several Kurdish-held cities in recent weeks.

The international community remains deeply concerned about the escalating violence in Syria, calling for an end to the bloodshed and efforts to achieve a lasting peace. However, with numerous factions involved and deeply entrenched political and military rivalries, finding a resolution remains a complex challenge. While various peace efforts continue, the situation remains volatile, and the region’s future hangs in the balance. The latest casualties underscore the urgent need for an end to the fighting and the restoration of stability in Syria.
