Ukraine has executed a drone strike on a Russian military fuel depot located in the city of Engels, a key logistical hub for Russia’s air force operations. The attack resulted in a large-scale fire that claimed the lives of two firefighters engaged in extinguishing the blaze. This strike represents another significant operation by Ukraine within Russian territory, intensifying the ongoing conflict.
Ukrainian military officials have confirmed the success of the operation, stating that the targeted fuel depot was completely destroyed. Oleksandr Kamyshyn, an advisor to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, disclosed that domestically manufactured long-range weaponry was deployed in this mission. He emphasized that the destruction of the depot would hinder Russia’s ability to launch airstrikes on Ukrainian cities and residential areas, thereby disrupting its military capabilities.
In response, Russia's Defense Ministry admitted the incident, reporting that its forces intercepted 32 Ukrainian drones overnight. Despite these defenses, significant damage was inflicted on the depot, sparking a fire visible from surrounding areas. Residents in Engels reported hearing multiple explosions, with many sharing accounts and footage of the incident on social media. Saratov region’s governor, Roman Busargin, confirmed the deaths of two emergency responders and declared a state of emergency. He assured the public that sufficient resources were being deployed to manage the aftermath.
Simultaneously, Russian missile strikes on Ukraine caused severe casualties and destruction. In Zaporizhzhia, a southern Ukrainian city, a missile attack killed 13 civilians and injured several others. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky shared harrowing footage on social media, depicting streets littered with debris and bodies amidst the ruins. This strike occurred mere minutes after regional authorities had issued warnings about incoming missile attacks, leaving little time for civilians to take shelter.
The ongoing conflict, now nearing its second year, has led to significant loss of life and extensive damage to civilian and military infrastructure on both sides. As hostilities intensify, the prospects for diplomatic resolution remain bleak, with both nations entrenched in a cycle of retaliation and counterattacks.
