Jimmy Carter Honoured with State Funeral in Washington, D.C.

The United States bid farewell to former president and humanitarian leader, Jimmy Carter, in a state funeral held at the Washington National Cathedral on January 9, 2025. The ceremony was attended by all five living U.S. presidents, reflecting the profound respect for Carter’s legacy. The 100-year-old former president passed away on December 29, 2024, and was remembered not only for his presidency but also for his extensive humanitarian efforts that continued long after his time in office.

President Joe Biden delivered an emotional eulogy, highlighting Carter’s unwavering commitment to public service and his profound moral character. “The man had character,” Biden said, underscoring Carter's dedication to improving lives through his work in both political and humanitarian arenas. The eulogy also reflected on Carter's pivotal role in achieving the Camp David Accords in 1977 and his continued advocacy for human rights and global peace, particularly through The Carter Center.

The funeral ceremony attracted global dignitaries, including former presidents Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, Barack Obama, and Donald Trump, who all expressed their respects for the late president. Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates noted that Carter set an exemplary standard for leadership, leveraging his voice to champion humanitarian causes that continue to reverberate worldwide. Bernice King, the daughter of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., also paid tribute, drawing comparisons between Carter’s leadership and her father’s unwavering commitment to justice and compassion.

Carter’s legacy is marked by his post-presidential humanitarian endeavors, which are often regarded as his most enduring contributions. While his presidency (1977–1981) was characterized by significant achievements, such as the Camp David Accords and efforts to resolve the energy crisis, it was his work after leaving office that truly defined his impact. In 2002, Carter was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his lifelong dedication to promoting peace and combating global challenges like the eradication of Guinea worm disease in Africa. His involvement with Habitat for Humanity also earned him admiration across the political spectrum, as he worked tirelessly to improve housing conditions for those in need.

Following the service in Washington, Carter’s remains were transported to his home state of Georgia for a private funeral and interment. There, he was laid to rest beside his wife, Rosalynn, who passed away in 2023. This marked the conclusion of six days of national mourning, which began with Carter lying in state at the Capitol Rotunda in Washington, D.C.
