Lieutenant General Herzi Halevi, Chief of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), has announced his resignation, citing the military’s failure to prevent the devastating Hamas attack on October 7, 2023. The unprecedented assault resulted in significant casualties and the abduction of Israeli civilians and soldiers into Gaza, exposing critical weaknesses in Israel’s intelligence and defense systems.
Halevi formally submitted his resignation on January 20, 2025, with his departure set to take effect on March 6. His decision comes amid widespread criticism of the IDF’s preparedness and response to the attack. Alongside Halevi, Major General Yaron Finkelman, the commander of the IDF’s Southern Command, has also resigned, further emphasizing the gravity of the security lapses.
In a statement issued by the Israeli military, Halevi accepted responsibility for the failures of October 7, acknowledging the army’s shortcomings in anticipating and countering the assault. Despite stepping down, he highlighted the IDF’s military gains in subsequent operations, stating that while not all of Israel’s strategic objectives have been achieved, significant progress has been made in securing the nation.
The October 7 attack by Hamas, launched from the Gaza Strip, caught Israeli security forces off guard and triggered one of the most severe crises in the country’s history. In response, Israel launched an extensive military campaign in Gaza, resulting in large-scale destruction and heavy casualties on both sides. The conflict has drawn intense international scrutiny, with growing calls for de-escalation and increased humanitarian aid for affected civilians.
Halevi’s resignation marks a pivotal moment for Israel’s military leadership, signaling a shift in accountability within the defense establishment. As Israel continues to confront regional security challenges, the appointment of his successor will be closely watched, as the new chief will be responsible for addressing vulnerabilities and reinforcing the nation’s defense strategy.
