Tensions along the India-Bangladesh border have risen sharply amid the ongoing construction of barbed wire fences by India's Border Security Force (BSF). The situation took a more serious turn on January 12, 2025, when Bangladesh summoned India's High Commissioner in Dhaka, Pranay Verma, to express "deep concern" over the BSF's actions. Bangladesh accused India of constructing fences at five points along the border without mutual consent, which it argued undermines bilateral agreements designed to foster cooperation. The Foreign Secretary of Bangladesh emphasized that such actions destabilize the trust and friendly relations between the two countries.
In response, High Commissioner Verma reaffirmed India's commitment to ensuring a secure and crime-free border. He underscored the importance of cooperation between the BSF and BGB in addressing common challenges such as smuggling and human trafficking, which continue to pose serious threats to both nations.
Despite these diplomatic exchanges, tensions on the ground persist. Reports from the border areas indicate face-offs between villagers from both sides, who have clashed with slogans and assembled near the border. Although these incidents have not escalated into violence, they illustrate the ongoing challenges in maintaining peace along the border and preventing further confrontation.
