The Government of Bangladesh 🇧🇩 has formally sent a diplomatic note to India, requesting the return of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. ✉️ The letter states that the purpose of her return is to participate in the judicial process in Bangladesh. ⚖️ Ranjit Jayaswal, a spokesperson for India’s Ministry of External Affairs, confirmed the receipt of the letter but declined to comment further on the matter. 🙅♂️ He stated, “We have received a diplomatic note from the Bangladesh High Commission, but at this time, we have no further comments.”
Sheikh Hasina sought refuge in India on August 5 amidst a student-led uprising. 🇮🇳 Since then, she has remained in India. She faces several charges related to crimes against humanity, and the International Criminal Tribunal has issued arrest warrants against her. ⚖️ The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Bangladesh has informed India that necessary steps are being taken to ensure her return for trial.
There is an existing prisoner exchange agreement between Bangladesh and India, which could facilitate the process. 🌍 However, the next steps will depend on India’s response, which will unfold in due course. ⏳
